Imagine that a procurement manager receives three EN 581 folding table test reports from three different suppliers. All three documents say “Pass,” and all three carry an official laboratory logo. However, only one of them will survive a tender review. The difference hides in a single line that most buyers never read: the test level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This article breaks down exactly what EN 581-1 and EN 581-3 measure. It then shows what a compliant report must contain, and finally it highlights four gaps that turn a valid certificate into a commercial liability.<\/p>\n

What EN 581 Is and What It Is Not<\/h2>\n

EN 581 is the European standard for outdoor furniture \u2014 seating and tables for camping, domestic and contract use<\/em>. The standard comes in several parts, and only two of them apply to a folding table. The table below summarises both parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Two conclusions follow from this split. First of all, an EN 581 folding table report is a mechanical safety document, not a material certificate<\/strong>. Therefore, the report will not tell you whether the HDPE compound is UV-stabilised, whether the powder coating resists salt spray, or whether the tabletop meets food-contact requirements. Those properties live in different standards.<\/p>\n

Secondly, and more importantly for buyers, an EN 581 folding table test is not a single pass or fail verdict<\/strong>. Instead, the standard works with test levels, and the level determines how hard the laboratory actually pushed the table.<\/p>\n

The Line That Decides Everything: The Test Level<\/h2>\n

EN 581-3 defines separate test levels for different types of use. Consequently, a report tested at the lowest level and a report tested at the contract level can look almost identical on page one. Both carry the same standard number, the same “Pass” column, and the same laboratory logo. In other words, the summary page tells you almost nothing.<\/p>\n

To illustrate the point, here is the exact wording from a real report we hold for one of our HDPE folding tables.<\/p>\n

Read that wording carefully. The report says domestic use<\/em>, and it does not say contract use. That is an honest document. In fact, this is exactly the kind of report you should insist on, because a supplier who hands over this level of detail is telling you the truth about what was tested.<\/p>\n

By contrast, a supplier who simply emails a PDF titled “EN 581 Certificate” \u2014 with no test level, no sample ID and no clause table \u2014 is telling you nothing you can defend in a tender.<\/p>\n

What the Buyer Should Ask<\/h3>\n

Before you accept any EN 581 folding table report, ask these four questions. First, which test level<\/strong> applies \u2014 domestic, contract, or a specific severe-use level? Secondly, does the sample match your order<\/strong>? For example, report EFBH25100354-CG-01 covers item DS-CZ180, so it does not automatically transfer to a different model. Thirdly, which clauses were actually executed<\/strong>? A result marked “N\/A” is legitimate for some clauses, for instance glass tops or parasol holes, but your supplier must be able to explain each one. Finally, is the report current<\/strong>, and is the laboratory accredited for this scope?<\/p>\n

Inside EN 581-3: The Five Tests That Matter for a Folding Table<\/h2>\n

EN 581-3 references EN 1730 for the actual test procedures. For a rectangular folding table, the working sequence looks like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

A table passes only if all of the following conditions hold after testing. There must be no fracture of any member, joint or component. Moreover, joints intended to be rigid must show no loosening. The table must still function after the load comes off, and it must not overturn during the stability tests.<\/p>\n

Notice the third condition in particular. It requires the table to remain functional after<\/em> you remove the load. As a result, cheap tables often fail in the field even when they technically survive the test. For instance, a blow-moulded HDPE top that deforms permanently by 4 mm at the centre has failed commercially, even though nothing cracked.<\/p>\n

The Four Gaps Most Buyers Miss<\/h2>\n

1. Clause 6 Is Often Excluded<\/h3>\n

The wording “Pass (Except clause 6)” appears in many real reports, and it is not a red flag. Clause 6 covers information for use<\/em>. That means the instruction manual must reach the end user in the language of the country where the table is sold, under the heading “IMPORTANT, RETAIN FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.” So it is a documentation requirement, not a structural test.<\/p>\n

However, it has a practical consequence for you. If you are the importer, clause 6 becomes your job. Therefore, ask your supplier whether they can provide multilingual instruction sheets and warning labels as part of the carton artwork.<\/p>\n

2. One Sample Is Not a Batch<\/h3>\n

Most reports state how many samples the laboratory tested, and that number is often just one piece. This practice is normal and accepted under the standard. Nevertheless, it means the report validates a design<\/em>, not your production lot<\/em>. The bridge between the two is your pre-shipment inspection protocol, not the certificate.<\/p>\n

3. The Certificate Does Not Follow the Model<\/h3>\n

This is the most common and most expensive misunderstanding. For example, a report for a 180 \u00d7 74 cm table with a 3.7 cm panel does not certify a 240 \u00d7 74 cm table with a 3.5 cm panel. The span, the load path and the failure mode all differ. Consequently, if you are building a multi-SKU range, ask which models the certificate covers and which need separate testing.<\/p>\n

4. Weather, UV and Fire Situate Elsewhere<\/h3>\n

EN 581 will not tell you how a table behaves after three summers in Jalisco or two winters in Rotterdam. Instead, UV stabilisation, colour fastness and weathering sit under separate test families, and fire behaviour sits under another family again. So a supplier who leads with “EN 581 certified” as a complete durability argument is answering a much narrower question than the one you asked.<\/p>\n
